Runner Spotlights #71

I hope everyone is having a great weekend! Mine has been pretty busy so far. I'm excited though because we have Monday off from school!

Now it's time for another runner spotlight...my favorite time of the week! I love reading other runners' stories about their running journey! If you are interested in being spotlighted on my blog please email me at mindy@roadrunnergirl.com! I'd love to spotlight you! You don't have to have a blog to be spotlighted...you just have to be a runner! ;-)

Today I'm spotlighting Sheena from Sheena Bean 13! She is a fellow FitFluential Ambassador! Keep reading to learn more about her and her running journey!

Name: Sheena Caines
State: CA

When and why did you start running?
I did track & field in high school, but stuck to mainly field events, with a 100m or 4x100m thrown in every now and then. I got to college and ran on the treadmill when I had time (aka almost never). I started to really run when I joined Team in Training in January 2010, 3 weeks after moving back to San Diego. I wanted to honor my nephews memory, and this was an awesome way to do it!

What is your favorite race and race distance?
I think 10k-½ marathons are my favorite distances. It takes me a few miles to get warmed up and feeling loose, so even though I give 5k’s my all, sometimes my body is like NO!

What is your race day routine?
I wake up with enough time (except for once, but we won’t get into that disaster!) to fully wake up, stretch, get something to eat and warm up a little bit. I set everything out the night before, including any after race stuff I may need, and usually only eat a half bagel with peanut butter and a banana before a ½ marathon, since my stomach is so sensitive (super jealous of those that can drink coffee at any time, much less before a race).

What is your most favorite piece of running gear?
Ah, I can’t pick just one! My regulars are definitely Brooks, Moving Comfort sports bra (life savers for sure), Injinji socks, Nuun and Honey Stinger (both key for my sensitive stomach. They are the only things ever that haven’t made me sick).

Do you follow any diet or take any specific supplements that complement your running?
Because of my sensitive stomach, only those proven gentle enough make the cut (and trust me, this was found out after painful testing!). Only Nuun and Honey Stinger are taken during long races. I’m a vegetarian, so I get my protein from non-meaty sources (not sure if that complements my running or not, but it works for me!)

What do you wish you’d known when you first started running?
Not to compare myself to others (something I still struggle with). I’m not going to ever win a race, and I’m perfectly ok with that. As long as I give 150% of myself to every race I do, that’s really all I can ask for.

What is your fondest running memory?
Every Team in Training Saturday with my amazing Green Team family.

What is one thing that most people do not know about you?

I was voted “Most Likely to be a Stand-Up Comedian” in my senior superlatives in high school :)
