Runner Spotlights #82

Happy Sunday! I hope everyone has had a fun weekend! We sure have!

Now it's time for another runner spotlight...my favorite time of the week! I love reading other runners' stories about their running journey! If you are interested in being spotlighted on my blog please email me at mindy@roadrunnergirl.com! I'd love to spotlight you! You don't have to have a blog to be spotlighted...you just have to be a runner! ;-) And I'm running low on spotlights so now's your time to shine!!!

Today I'm spotlighting Erin from Run With Erin! She loves inspiring moms to get out there and run! Keep reading to learn more about her and her running journey!

Name:  Erin Gifford
State:  Virginia

When and why did you start running?
I started running in earnest two years ago. I wanted to get fit, but I didn't want to join a gym. I wanted to see if running would “stick” before investing in a gym. I've since joined a couple of running clubs, run five half-marathons and ran my first marathon this past December. I’m now planning to run a half-marathon in every state.

What is your favorite race and race distance?
My favorite race is my most recent race: Charleston Half Marathon. I ran this on January 18 with my husband. The weather was a bit cool for Charleston, SC, but it was a very flat, fast course so I was able to PR. I had a goal of 1:50 and I finished in 1:49:41 (8+ minutes faster than my next best time). The half-marathon is definitely my favorite distance.

What is your race day routine?
I wake up about two hours ahead of a race to eat a bagel with peanut butter. I also eat maybe half a banana. For the marathon, I also ran on the treadmill for 10 minutes to loosen up and relax. Lots of deep breathing too to relax and mellow out before a race.

What is your most favorite piece of running gear?
I love my new Garmin watch. I got it for my birthday in late-December. I love to be able to easily see my pace as I’m running so I can quickly adjust my speed. I probably would not have met my goal of 1:50 or faster at the Charleston Half Marathon without my Garmin watch.

Do you follow any diet or take any specific supplements that complement your running?
No, though I have just started clean eating, so we’ll see how that goes.

What do you wish you’d known when you first started running?
That I could run a marathon. I never, ever thought I could run a marathon. It just seems like this insane distance. I clearly didn't have confidence in myself to think that it was possible. It still seems hard to believe that anyone can run that far, but I've signed up for the New Jersey Marathon in late-April, so it looks like I’ll be doing it again.

What is your fondest running memory?
Definitely running my first marathon back in December (Rehoboth Beach Marathon). I was nervous ahead of the race, but I just remember feeling so calm and collected while I was running. I felt great and never hit a wall. It was fabulous. It was an amazing feeling crossing the finish line too.

What is one thing that most people do not know about you?
It’s not running related, but I was the school spelling bee champion on the sixth grade. I’m still a very good speller and am constantly looking at spelling and grammar when I read anything (emails, social media posts, etc.).

Here are all the different ways you can connect with Erin!

Fitness Friday...April 4th Edition!

Happy Friday! It's been a tough week. Hayden started running a fever on Saturday after my race. We took him to Urgent Care where they diagnosed him with strep throat. But on Sunday night he was still feeling miserable and running a fever. So no school on Monday. Then his eye got really red. I ended up taking him back to the doctor. He now had pink eye and a fever virus that has been going around and lasting 7-10 days! My poor little guy!!! He was just miserable! And seeing him like that was so hard! I hated I couldn't make him feel better!

I missed 3 days of work this week due to Hayden being sick. Thankfully, my in-laws came on Thursday and today to stay with him so I could go back to work. I am so grateful for them!

Now it's time for Fitness Friday! I didn't run as much as I would have liked this week due to Hayden being sick and my knee has been a little achy from the half. So I took it kind of easy.

  • Sunday- Rest Day
  • Monday- #plankaday 1:10, 3.11 mile run in 30:29 average pace 9:49

  • Tuesday- #plankaday 1:05
  • Wednesday- #plankaday 1:16
  • Thursday- #plankaday 1:05, 3.11 mile run in 29:59 average pace 9:39

  • Friday- #plankaday 1:00

Weight loss this week: 1.3
Weight loss total: 8.2

So that was my week! I'm hoping that no one else, including me, in the family gets the sickness Hayden had. This weekend we are supposed to go camping with the cub scouts. We have decided to just go up for the day on Saturday since Hayden has been sick. I don't want to risk him relapsing sleeping outside in the cooler air. Plus there is rain in the forecast all weekend.

I'm also not sure if I'm going to run a long run this weekend or not. I feel like the achy knee is a sign that my body needs some recovery time. If I do run it will only be 5 miles. And I will take it slow and easy. I only have one more race this season...the Crescent City Classic 10K in two weeks. So I'm not super worried about the training. I also know it's time for some new shoes so I got those yesterday. Hopefully they will make the knee happier!

I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Under Armour Marbella Sunglasses Review!

I received this product free to review. I received no other compensation. All opinions in the post below are mine and mine alone!

Sunglasses are super important to me as a runner. Without them I will get a headache from running and squinting in the sun. They are one of my must have items while running...unless I'm running when the sun isn't out!

I was super excited to learn that Under Armour came out with sunglasses built specifically for the female athlete! Most of the time sunglasses are too big for my small face so I couldn't wait to try this new model! So here's to introducing the Women's Under Armour Marbella Sunglasses!

The first thing I noticed about them was how lightweight they were! I couldn't even tell I had them on! They were super comfortable and I already loved them.

But the biggest test for me is to see how they hold up while running. Will they slip? Will they fog up? Will they block out the sun?

The first time I wore them was when I ran the Azalea Trail Run 10K. (Yeah I know you're not supposed to try anything new on race day but I knew I could just take them off if they bugged me) Well I totally forgot I had them on! They didn't slip at all. And they didn't fog up while I was running which is a huge plus! In the heat and humidity here on the Gulf Coast it is hard to find a lens that doesn't fog up from your sweat.

I also really loved how clear everything looked through the lenses but still blocked out the sunlight.

Since I got the Under Armour Marbella sunglasses I haven't run in any others! I love them! You can see that from my collage of running pictures lol!

Rock 'n' Fly Half Marathon Recap!

Be sure to read my post about packet pick-up!

About 3AM I woke up to really loud thunder and lightning! Here was the thunderstorm that had been predicted. I wasn't sure how long it would last but I hoped it would be finished in time for the race. I was able to get back to sleep pretty quickly. Due to the one hour start time delay I was able to sleep in until 6AM! Yay!

I got dressed, ate some oatmeal, and drank some coffee. Then I hopped into the car with my friends Paige, Katrina, and Laura. I was happy to see that it was NOT raining!!! We headed to our meeting place to meet some of our other Sole2Soul Sisters that were running this race. While we waited for everyone to get there we took a few pictures (of course)!

Me and Paige ready to Rock 'n' Fly!

After some pics we loaded back into the cars for the 1 hour commute to the race. I was really excited about getting to run on the Naval Base! It's not something you are allowed to do everyday!

We made it on base fairly quickly and found parking a lot easier than I expected.

We got some great group pictures before the race! And as you can see...clear skies and SUN!!! :-)

After pictures we lined up at the porta potties. We had 30 minutes until start time....and we spent all 30 minutes in line for the porta potties. This race definitely did not have enough porta potties. When we all made it out we headed towards the start line. They said a prayer and a guy played the National Anthem on the electric guitar...it was awesome! They also said a few more words and played a video of the Blue Angels (who had an airshow and couldn't be there...sad face). They had a huge jumbo tron but in the crowd of the start line I couldn't see it. Right before the start they shot confetti and streamers into the sky! It was pretty cool...but really hard to see in my picture!

And then...we were off! I think it took us about 5 minutes to get to the start line though because it was so crowded. The 5K started at the same time as the half so that may be one reason why it was so congested. But the song Danger Zone from Top Gun was playing and it really helped pump us up!

Once we started running you could feel the excitement in the air! I loved seeing how everyone was dressed! There were several people dressed as rockers...mullets, long hair, plastic guitars...it was great! And I loved seeing this woman running with the flag!

We were barely at half a mile and we saw these rocker guys on the sidelines! A picture was a must!!! And they LOVED that we stopped for one!

I was really excited to run this course! We had many landmarks that we would be running by. The first one was the Barrancas National Cemetery. It was such a great reminder of all the amazing men and women who have served our country!

Next we passed by the Fort Barrancas Redoubt. You may remember me and my family visiting here last spring!

Shortly after that we came upon the Pensacola National Naval Aviation Museum! My family has visited here many times too! My boys love it!

Then started the long stretch down Blue Angel Parkway. And the slant of the road was awful! Luckily, this race was playing a song at each mile! That helped pass the time!

It was starting to get pretty hot. The course had no shade and we were running much later than I was used to running. We were prepared for cloudy skies (that's what the forecast had shown) but instead we had sun beating down on us.

Around mile 4 I broke away from my friends. They were slowing way down and taking walk breaks and I was feeling really good and wanted to keep going. I really tried to enjoy my surroundings as I ran! We turned around and started heading back around mile 5.5. We were running by the Gulf of Mexico and it was gorgeous! But the slant of the road was starting to get to me. My knee was starting to hurt a little and that scared me a bit. I tried my best to find the less slanted area to run on.

Around mile 7.5 we ran by the Pensacola Lighthouse again (I missed seeing it the first time we passed it). I remembered climbing to the top of the lighthouse (177 steps or 15 flights of stairs!!!) a few years ago with the family.

Right before mile 8 we made a right hand turn onto Radford Blvd. We passed Fort Barrancas and started heading back to where we started. I started seeing people on the side of the road cheering. And I had to take a picture of this Blue Angel plane for my boys!

This was the hard part. We were at mile 9 and passed by the start line....and we could SEE the finish line. There was a ton of people cheering on the sidelines here...but they kept saying we were almost done and that the finish was in sight. I wanted to yell at them...no we are not almost done! We still have 4 more miles to go! But I didn't. I was nice. I just smiled and waved.

The heat was really starting to get to me at this point. It was close to 11:30AM and the sun beating down was brutal. We made a left hand turn and passed by what looked like office buildings and the library.

The street was really pretty (still no shade) but I was getting to that point where I was so ready to be finished.

We made another right hand turn and then a left onto what looked like a pretty busy road. The volunteers were great at directing the traffic though. At this point you could see people on the other side of the road coming back. I saw a mile marker on their side and turned to look at it...it was mile 12! I was at mile 10! Ugh! I had a pretty good stretch to go to get to where they were at. We made another right turn and there was a water stop with some Marines running in cadence with a flag. It was awesome hearing them chant!

Finally after what seemed like forever I made it to mile 11! I only took this picture as an excuse to walk for a second lol! You can also see the white van with the huge speakers in it. These vans were at every mile playing a song! Awesome! The mile 11 song was I'm Sexy and I Know It! Lol! I sure didn't feel sexy at that point!

After a big loop, we finally got back on that main road...and there was mile 12!!! Yay!!! I looked on the other side of the road and saw my friend Donna! She was doing great but I could tell the heat was getting to her too.

Another sign of motivation lol!

We finally turned right and retraced our steps back to the street with the office buildings. I knew the finish line was not far away. We made one more right turn and I could see and hear the finish line! I saw the mile 13 sign and then I took a left turn to run through the finish line! Whew! I had done it! I had survived that heat!

My official time was 2:34:53! Not too bad for such a hot race!

This race had tons of food options which was awesome! They had bananas, apples, oranges, pizza, and Subway sandwiches. I wasn't really hungry though. I grabbed a water and a Subway sandwich but ended up not eating anything. I was just too hot.

The medal was pretty awesome! I worked hard for that thing!

My hubby and boys met me at the finish line! They didn't get there in time to see me finish (it took them 20 minutes to get on base) but I was so glad to see them there regardless!

After the race we headed with Paige and her family to get something to eat. We decided on Sonny's BBQ and Paige and I changed and cleaned up as much as we could in their bathroom! I didn't take a picture (blogger fail) but my lunch was so good! I got pulled pork, green beans, and a baked sweet potato. It came with 2 pieces of garlic bread but I only ate half a piece. And while I was changing mu hubby ordered me a coke (I just LOVE a coke after a long run) but I sent it back and got water instead since I have given up Coke for Lent. See? I made healthy choices and I was proud of myself!!!

After lunch we headed back to the base to the Naval Air Museum. But as I stated earlier this week, our trip got cut short because Hayden got sick.

Overall, I really enjoyed the Blue Angels Rock 'n' Fly Half Marathon! I think they have some improvements to make but I also think it went great for their first year! I will definitely consider running this one again!

But next time I will wear sunscreen! I was so sunburned after this race! :-(

This was my last half marathon of the season. This one proved that it is just getting way too hot to race here on the Gulf Coast!

Rock 'n' Fly Half Marathon Packet Pick-Up!

This past weekend I ran the Blue Angels Rock 'n' Fly Half Marathon in Pensacola! I'll have my recap up for you tomorrow. Today I want to tell you about packet pick-up!

This was a new race. Truthfully, there was a race called the Blue Angel Marathon that happened for over 20 years. But after the devastation of Hurricane Ivan in 2004 the race was not brought back. Some of the commanding officers at Pensacola Naval Air Station decided it was time to bring a race back to the beautiful NAS Pensacola!

Packet pick-up was not located on base. It was located in downtown Pensacola at Seville Quarter. I rode the 45 minute drive with my friend Donna to pick up packets for several of our Sole2Soul Sisters.

When we arrived at packet pick-up we learned that the race would be delayed an hour due to the predicted thunderstorms at start time. That put the start time at 9AM. Packet pick-up was really easy. They had everything organized by bib numbers. I didn't have to wait at all.

There were a few tables with advertisements for other races. But other than that there weren't really any vendors.

I made sure to get my traditional picture with my race bib!

The bibs for the race were super cute! I love the pink! And the shirts were awesome! The material was so soft and the shirts were fitted which I love. A brighter color would have been the only thing I would have liked more.

After a quick packet pick-up we headed home. I ate my traditional pre race meal of pizza. And then I got everything ready for the next day!

I was ready to Rock 'n' Fly!!!

Stay tuned tomorrow for my race recap!

QOTD: Have you ever ran a race that was delayed due to weather?
