10K With a Lot of Talk!

Saturday was my first long run since returning home from California. I was a little worried about this run for several reasons. First...I was running at 6:30 AM and my body still wasn't all the way adjusted to my time zone yet. Second...I would be running in the heat and humidity. My body got used to the 50 degree California weather that I ran in for 2 weeks! But I made sure to hydrate well the day before.

I was super excited my friend Andria was coming to run with me too! I really didn't want to run what I thought was going to be a tough run alone. Plus I really missed running with friends while I was in California!

The run started out well. Andria asked me about my trip...and I didn't stop talking until we were finished running! It was the fastest (not in literal time but in the run being finished) run I think I've ever done because talking about my trip made it go by so fast! Poor Andria...I don't think I let her talk at all lol! She was super sweet about listening to all my excitement about California!

And was the run hard? No! All the talking I did made me not even realize I was running and running in the heat! That's my kinda run lol!

After the run we stood in my driveway and talked even more! I think we talked another 45 minutes after the run lol! I love having running friends!!!

QOTD: Do you like to talk to friends while you're running? Or would you rather listen to others talk?

The Weekly Chase #77!

It's a new week! We've had a very relaxing weekend. I think we are almost caught up on our sleep! And I think we are finally getting adjusted to our time zone again. We've been living on California time since we got here lol! The boys have been sleeping until 10 and 11 am every day (That's 8 and 9 am in Cali). But we have finally started to wake up at a decent hour and be able to eat breakfast instead of going straight to lunch!

We didn't do much this weekend. We all needed rest and Andy spent time recovering from being sick. I think he's finally feeling better! During one of his rest sessions this weekend I took the boys out for frozen yogurt! Yes...I ate frozen yogurt too...because they had one that was only 8 calories per ounce! You can't beat that! And I topped mine with fruit for a healthy option! Yum!

Now it's time for another Weekly ChaseI'm ready to tell you all about my goals for this week! I hope you will link up your own goals with me too! And feel free to use the badge below in your post too! You can grab the badge HERE! :-)

Road Runner Girl

Here are my goals from last week!

  • Goal #1: Run every day! Yes! The streak is still going strong! I even ran in the airport terminal on Tuesday so I wouldn't break the streak!
  • Goal #2: Roll and stretch daily. 75%. I've done better since I've gotten home. Still need to do more!
  • Goal #3: Log and stay under all my calories this week. Yes! And I've enjoyed my fruits and veggies since I've gotten home. Although I will say that nothing beats the fruit in California...it was so good!
  • Goal #4: Pack for the trip home. Yes! I got all of us packed up on Monday so we could head home Tuesday. :-(
  • Goal #5: Unpack when we arrive home. 75%. I've gotten all of my things unpacked but I still have a few things of the boys to unpack.

Here are the goals I will be chasing this week!

Goal #1: Run every day! I'm loving the #RWRunStreak! I even have plans to run some of my runs with a friend this week so I'm excited about that!

Goal #2: Roll and stretch daily. I've got to get back into this to avoid injury especially since I'm streaking right now!

Goal #3: Log and stay under all my calories this week. I'm so close to my goal weight! I know the weight loss may be a little slower since I'm so close but I'm determined to make it happen!

Goal #4: Finish unpacking. I need to get the rest of the boys' clothes unpacked and the suitcase put away.

Goal #5: Have fun with my boys this week! I know I can't top a trip to California but I want to plan some fun activities for us to participate in this week!

So that's the plan around here! Good luck with your goals this week too!

Runner Spotlights #91

Happy weekend everyone! This weekend has been all about relaxing and resting up from our trip! My hubby has been sick all week too so I've been trying to get him well. The boys have been great since we got home..no more sickness for them. Hopefully I will stay well!

I did get in a 6 mile run with my friend Andria yesterday! I was worried about the heat and humidity since I got so used to those amazing California temps but I did great!

It's time for another runner spotlight...my favorite time of the week! I love reading other runners' stories about their running journey! If you are interested in being spotlighted on my blog please email me at mindy@roadrunnergirl.com! I'd love to spotlight you! You don't have to have a blog to be spotlighted...you just have to be a runner! ;-) And I'm running low on spotlights so now's your time to shine!!!

Today I'm spotlighting Lynda from Fitness Mom Wine Country! She lives in Wine Country in California (I'm jealous) and posts the most amazing recipes on her blog! Lynda is currently training for her first half marathon! Keep reading to learn more about her and her running journey!

Name:  Lynda
State:  CA

When and why did you start running?
I loved to run when I was younger in my 20’s then just did not really stay with it.  Not until the last few years, I picked it back up and am loving it.  Mostly because our daughter is old enough to join me and she is a beautiful runner.

What is your favorite race and race distance?
As of now I have only done 5k’s that count and Color and Mud Runs, and I completed the Warrior Dash.  I don’t have a favorite, I just enjoy them all and have a blast.  I am prepping for my very first half marathon coming up at the end of June.  The Zooma Napa Valley and that will be an experience I am sure.

What is your race day routine?
Up early because I can’t sleep.  Rinse my face, pull my hair back, brush my teeth.  Grab a banana, make myself eat a small bowl of oatmeal {at least 30 mins prior to the race}.  Head to the bathroom a million times, my bladder is worse on race days.  Go and just do it.

What is your most favorite piece of running gear?
My Ulitmate Direction hand held water bottle is a must.  My Ipod shuffle {old school style} has to be on me and I wear my
“Faith” bracelet every time I run, even if just a training run.  Our daughter is named Faith and I have a bracelet with the name on it.  It just means something to me while running.

Do you follow any diet or take any specific supplements that complement your running?
I drink Vega pre-workout energizer about 20 mins before running.  I swear by this stuff.  I also hydrate with Ultima replenisher and add that my water.  Sometimes I use gel/energy blocks.

What do you wish you’d known when you first started running?
To understand my body and form better, it took me a while.  I am finally getting it thanks you fellow runners like yourself and others that I read and follow.

What is your fondest running memory?
The Napa Valley turkey trot.  When our daughter was faster than I and wanted to take off.  I gave her my blessing and remember watching her go and leave my site as she turned the corner.  My eyes filled with tears of excitement for her and I was so proud.  I caught up just in time to see her about ½ mile ahead of me sprint to the finish line and cross it while I just cheered her on as loud as I could.  My hubby and her brother were waiting for us at the finish line.  It was a mommy moment for sure.

What is one thing that most people do not know about you?
I am a sensitive person, I truly care about others and tend to get my feelings hurt easy because of it. I am very passionate about what I believe in and stand for and very loyal to those who are true to me and my family.

Fitness Friday...June 20th Edition!

Happy Friday! After our plane got cancelled and we had an 8 hour wait until our next flight which also got delayed by 40 minutes...we finally made it home around 3 am early Wednesday morning! It was a rough day of traveling. By the time we got home we had all been awake for 24 hours! So we are still experiencing jet lag around here!

I will say that waiting in the airport for 8 hours with two little boys is no fun! They were so bored! And I got pretty bored too!

It's time for Fitness Friday! I almost broke the streak this week! My plan on our travel day was to run a mile once we got home. My plane was supposed to land at 4:57 PM and then we would drive home 3 hours from the airport and be at home no later than 8:00 PM. But because our earlier flight got cancelled our plane didn't land until 11:30 PM and then we had to drive home. I was super upset about breaking my streak...so instead I ran my mile in the airport terminal! I got some crazy stares but I don't care! The streak still lives on!!! :-)

  • Friday-3.11 mile run in 28:48 average pace 9:15
  • Saturday- 1.02 mile run in 9:27 average pace 9:13, 13.33 mile bike ride through San Francisco and across the Golden Gate Bridge

  • Sunday- 1.03 mile run in 9:25 average pace 9:11
  • Monday- 3.11 mile run in 28:58 average pace 9:18
  • Tuesday- 1 mile run in the airport terminal
  • Wednesday- #plankaday 1:05, 1.25 mile run in 11:01 average pace 8:48

  • Thursday- #plankaday 1:06, 1.25 mile run in 11:15 average pace 9:00

Weight loss the past two weeks: 2.7 lbs.
Weight loss total: 20.6 lbs.

The running went great this week! I'm so glad I was able to keep my run streak alive! Although my Garmin didn't pick up the satellites in the airport terminal I made sure to run at least 10 minutes to be sure I got in a mile (I normally run my mile in the 8-9 minute range).

I miss running in California though. Every morning the temperatures I ran in were in the 50's! It was so nice! When I returned home and ran on Wednesday the heat and humidity hit me like a ton of bricks. It may take a while to get my body acclimated to the heat and humidity again. :-(

I am sooooo proud of my weight loss while I was in California and on vacation!!! I tried my hardest to make good food choices. But I also ate some of the yummy stuff that I probably wouldn't normally eat too. I just tried to control my portions. And it worked! I lost 2.7 pounds over the two weeks that I was in California! I'm very pleased! And I hit the 20 pound mark!!! And another milestone...I now weigh 2 pounds less than what I weighed when I got pregnant with Hayden (my first child)!!! That's amazing to me because I was so healthy then! :-)

I'm hoping to run at least a 5-6 miler this weekend. I'm still so tired from traveling! This jet lag is no joke!

I hope everyone has a great weekend!!!

Travel Day!

I'm sorry to say that my time in California has come to an end. We've had an amazing time and I can't wait to tell you all about it! I love my best friend Stephanie and her family so much!!! Good friends are so hard to come by and I am so thankful for her and our friendship!

The only downside to this trip is that all 5 kids (hers and mine together) got sick! They all started running fevers the second week we were here and we were unable to do some of the things we had planned. But we still had an amazing time and it was so worth the trip!

Today is our travel day back home. Sawyer is still running a fever...and Andy is running a fever now too! :-( Please pray we have safe, uneventful flights and the drive from the airport to home is uneventful and safe too! Thank you!!!

Be patient with me this week as I return home and try to adjust to the 2 hour time difference as well as get us all back into a routine. I promise next week I will return to my normal blogging schedule...including posts that are all about my amazing trip! :-)

QOTD: What is your favorite thing about San Francisco? Or if you've never been what would you want to see or do if you visited?

The Weekly Chase #76!

We've had so much fun here in California! I am so sad to see our time end here! But we return home this week. I can't wait to share all the fun we've had with you though!

Now it's time for another Weekly ChaseI'm ready to tell you all about my goals for this week! I hope you will link up your own goals with me too! And feel free to use the badge below in your post too! You can grab the badge HERE! :-)

Road Runner Girl

Here are last week's goals!

  • Goal #1: Run every day! Yes! The run streak has continued here in California!!!
  • Goal #2: Roll and stretch daily. I've done great with the stretching but not the rolling. I've got to get back into the rolling routine this week!
  • Goal #3: Log and stay under all my calories this week. Yes! I stayed under my calories and still enjoyed yummy food from here!
  • Goal #4: Have fun in San Francisco!!! Definitely! We have had sooooo much fun here! San Francisco is an amazing city!

Here are my goals for this week!

Goal #1: Run every day! Gotta keep the streak alive! It's going to be tough the day we travel home because we catch our plane super early. I will be cutting it close once I get home...I'll have to run a mile at night to keep the streak alive.

Goal #2: Roll and stretch daily. I've got to get back into the rolling routine.

Goal #3: Log and stay under all my calories this week. I've had some yummy food here but I'm also ready to get back to my fruits and veggies that I've learned to love so much!

Goal #4: Pack for the trip home. This is a must! We accumulated quite a few souvenirs from this trip so I'm hoping I can cram them all into the suitcase lol!

Goal #5: Unpack when we arrive home. Unpacking isn't too bad. Will need to get it done so we can get back into our routine. Of course it is still summer time for me and the boys so we won't have a strict routine! ;-)

So that's my plan this week! Good luck to everyone else with their goals!!!

Runner Spotlights #90

I hope everyone is having a great weekend! We return home from California this week. I'm sad to leave because we've been having so much fun! But I also miss my sweet cat Cullen so much and can't wait to see him!

Today I'm spotlighting Melanie from Aussie Girl Gone Dopey! That's right...she's from Australia! She has an incredible story so keep reading to learn more about her!

Name: Melanie
State: Melbourne, Australia

When and why did you start running?
I started running regularly about 5 years ago. To be honest I only started doing it because I was applying for a job with a fitness component that I needed to meet. I didn't know I would fall in love with it. Now I run 3-5 times a week with gym sessions in between.

What is your favorite race and race distance?
The half marathon is definitely my favorite distance but that's probably because it's the only distance I've ever raced. I skipped the 5km and 10km races and went straight for the half. Now I'm training for my first full marathon in July and the Dopey Challenge at Disney World in 2015.

The 'Run Melbourne' event in Melbourne in July each year is my favorite race. It's the first one I did and also the course that I did my fastest time, 1:55. I'm hoping to pull up ok from my first marathon to be able to still give it a crack this year.

What is your race day routine?
I always have my outfit, shoes and bag ready the night before the race. I make sure my timing chip is on my shoes and bib on my top. My iPhone and Garmin is charged and the event playlist that I made especially for the event is good to go.

I also put out all my race fuel, which is usually just gummy lollies and Powerade with my bag so I don't forget it.

I get up a few hours before the race so I have enough time to shower and have brekky. I've experimented a bit with pre-race breakfast and have settled on wholegrain toast with tomato and avocado and a couple of instant coffees. Probably not the best breakfast but it works for me and I always make sure I go to the loo before I leave home and then a quick nervous pee when I get to the event.

What is your most favorite piece of running gear?
Do I just have to pick one?

I haven't had the best luck with running gear. There have been giant blisters, black toenails and chafe in places I didn't know could even chafe! I've worked out a good set up that seems to work for me and I wear the same thing for every long run. I've even started buying my favorite Under Armour tank top in different colors.
I'm a big fan of Mizuno running shoes at the moment and I love my Garmin watches.
But the thing I can't run without is my iPhone. I know that sounds ridiculous, but part of my love for running involves the music and the accountability of my running apps. Unfortunately the data from the apps don't satisfy my data love so I take my Garmin too.

Do you follow any diet or take any specific supplements that complement your running?
No not really. I'm a vegetarian with an intolerance to dairy so it limits my diet a little bit. I get most of my protein from fresh veggies, beans, lentils and chickpeas. I think because I eat so little artificial foods, I struggle with most supplements like protein shakes and sports drinks. Powerade and Dextro tablets for long runs and that's it.

I also love a sneaky Quest bar. I'm not entirely convinced they are good for you, I mean, how can they be, they taste so naughty!

What do you wish you’d known when you first started running?
Oh I think I could write a book about this. I've just started a list of "Rookie Errors" on my blog.
1. Double bra
2. Buy your shoes half a size bigger than the perfect fit. Your toenails will thank you.
3. Body Glide, everywhere! You can never have enough.
4. Plan, plan, plan. In the past two weeks I've ended up running on a freeway and running in pitch black because I didn't plan property.
5. Don't obsess over your watch and your time. You actually have more fun and go faster if you don't.

What is your fondest running memory?
I think reaching the 18km mark in Run Melbourne in 2013 and realizing that I was still going and going pretty quick. I saw my partner and his daughter cheering me on and I remember thinking, I'm going to smash this and I did. I beat my best time by 13 minutes. I always feel bad about making them get up so early to watch me run for two hours, but secretly love having them there.

What is one thing that most people do not know about you?
I can find a Grey's Anatomy quote to fit every situation!

I'm obsessed with proving people wrong about me.

Is there anything else you would like to share with us?
I've recently become an Ambassador for an amazing group called Running Divas Australia. It's about creating a support group for women runners online. After reading Kathrine Switzer's book 'Marathon Woman' I felt like I had to get involved somehow. There aren't a lot of groups like this in Australia and I was stoked when Erica, the crazy woman who runs Running Divas who is currently running 12 marathons in 12 months for her 50th birthday, asked me to be a part of it. Sometimes women hold each other back when they should be supporting each other and that's a big part of Running Divas and the community they are trying to create. The site is www.runningdivas.com.au
