The Weekly Chase #28!

It's Monday! It seems like this weekend flew by! I had a great 5 mile run on Saturday in the drizzly rain with friends! Then we spent the day being lazy and watching movies while it poured rain outside. On Sunday we went to church and then set up a new pool for the boys for the rest of the summer. Yes...they are excited! It's a small pool but perfect for them! One day we will hopefully have a real pool in the backyard! At least that's a dream of mine and the hubby!

It's time for another Weekly Chase! I hope you will join in and link up with us this week!

Road Runner Girl

Here's how last week went for me:

  • Goal #1: Run at least one mile every day. So I should have worded this goal differently. I meant to say I would run at least one mile every day until Thursday when the streak ended. I did do that. But Friday and Sunday I didn't run since I'm no longer streaking.
  • Goal #2: Stretch and roll every day. Yes! I even did this on the days I didn't run! Yay! Gotta keep this up especially when full time training starts!
  • Goal #3: Update my resume. No. Big time fail! I didn't even think about this goal the rest of the week! How awful is that?
  • Goal #4: Work on St. Jude fundraising. Some. I ended up getting another donation (Thanks Sherra)!

So here's the plan for this week:

Goal #1: Run 4 times this week. I'm adding an extra day of running into my schedule. I loved streaking so much and found that the one mile runs were like speedwork. I'm going to add a day that I will run only 1 mile...at a fast pace.

Goal #2: Get in at least one walk each week for some cross training. One thing I loved about the streak was getting outside every day and being active. Walking the other day with my friend Rhonda was so enjoyable and a great way for me to cross train. I want to incorporate walks into my schedule....either by myself or with my family.

Goal #3: Update my resume. Yeah gotta do this one this week.

Goal #4: Register the boys for school. The school has changed the registration process this year and it's now all online. I love that but just need to sit down at the computer and do it (instead of blogging, reading blogs, etc.)!

Goal #5: Work on St. Jude fundraising. Yes this will be an ongoing goal until my goal is met. I'm $50 away from being at the halfway mark! Want to help me get there? You can donate HERE! :-)

Hopefully this week I will be a little more successful with my goals! I need to remember what they are each week and conquer them!!!

QOTD: What are your goals this week? Do you like to go on walks?

Runner Spotlights #43

Happy Sunday! I've a busy but fun weekend so far! Friday afternoon we went and saw Despicable Me 2! I LOVED the first movie and this one did not disappoint! It had me laughing! I love those little yellow minion guys!!! Saturday morning I ran 5 miles with some friends. Then we had a day of watching movies and being lazy because it was raining all day. It's been a great weekend so far!

It's time for another runner spotlight! If you are interested in being spotlighted on my blog please email me at mindy@roadrunnergirl.com. I would love to feature you! You don't have to have a blog to be spotlighted...you just have to be a runner! :-)

Today I am spotlighting Beth from Read Hard Run Harder! I first met Beth at the Gulf Coast Half Marathon on Pensacola Beach. While we were running she saw me and told me she loved my blog (now what girl doesn't like hearing that)! Since then Beth has started her own blog and I love reading it! Keep reading to learn more about her!

Name: Beth
State: Alabama

When and why did you start running?
I really started running seriously in September 2012.  To be honest, I really kind of started running to force myself to quit complaining about running.  So here is the story:  Forever, as long as I can remember, I hated running--I was slow, and it was really, really painful.  Last summer, I decided to enter into a local sprint triathlon down here at the beach.  I trained all summer.  The swimming and biking portions were no problem for me (I swam for a team in another life and was an avid spinning class attendee), but the measly 2 mile run killed me.  Come race day, I blazed (OK that may be an exaggeration) through the open water swim and the bike, but literally doubled by overall race time during that sad, painful 2 mile run.  Right then and there, I told myself that I was going to train for and run a half marathon so that I will not suck at running anymore.  And I did it.  I ran my first half marathon, Rock N Roll New Orleans, this February.  What I didn't anticipate was for my general loathing of all things running to turn into a love.  I am so happy that I found this wonderful sport.  While I still plan on participating in some triathlons this season, my true new love is the road race!

What is your favorite race and race distance?
I am really not super built for speed, so I really prefer long distance, slower paced running.  I love the half marathon; it is long enough to feel like a super challenge, but not body wrecking like the marathon, or so I have heard.  It is a total accomplishment to finish one alive.  I have never run a marathon and right now, I really have no desire to start training for one (OK, maybe a little desire).  As of right now, I have only run 2 half marathons (a condition I plan to remedy when it cools down here in the South), but I really enjoyed the Gulf Coast Half Marathon at Pensacola Beach.  The scenery was gorgeous—I love the beach—I ran a 27 minute PR, and those finisher’s medals are just awesome!

What is your race day routine?
I get up at whatever time gives me at least 2 hours before I need to leave for the race.  I take a shower as ridiculous as that is before I get my sweat on (I don’t feel awake without one), drink at least 1 cup of coffee, and eat toast and peanut butter with a glass of water (I have been hydrating before with Nuun—the best ever!).  Since all my clothes are laid out the night before, there is no stress over where stuff is or what I am going to wear…instead, I obsess about going to the bathroom!  Am I the only one who is in total panic about that?  I do run in makeup, so I put my face on before I leave.  I try to calm my nerves and go!

What is your most favorite piece of running gear?
I am obsessed with running skirts! For the longest time, I only ran in capris because I was convinced that my thigh chub-rub prevented me from running in a skirt.  What a waste of non-running skirt-wearing-time that was! These things are awesome! They don’t ride up like shorts; they are cooler than capris, and are much, much cuter! Do you think running skirt collecting is a legitimate hobby? But oh, I forgot about SweatyBands headbands…

Do you follow any diet or take any specific supplements that complement your running?
Considering that I still trying to drop those last 15 lbs., I try to eat as cleanly as possible, but I have to be honest, and say that I could use some work in that department.  I do really well during the week, but kind of lose it on the weekends.  I’m hoping that the accountability of my blog will help with my clean eating plan, and help me stay on track.  Regarding supplements, I really don’t take or use anything.  I am thinking about starting to use a protein powder when I finish doing my strength training sessions.  Does anybody have any suggestions?  I think I’m looking for something that is low in carbs and sugar.

What do you wish you’d known when you first started running?
That you should take out another mortgage on your house so you can get all the cool running gear! No not really, but there are some awesome bits of running gear out there, and if you are like me—if it’s bright and colorful—then you want it.

What is your fondest running memory?
Crossing the finish line at the Gulf Coast Half Marathon at Pensacola Beach this last April.  It was my second half marathon and a PR by 27 minutes! I was so stoked.  But the best part was seeing my boyfriend at the finish and hearing him screaming his head off for me.  The fact that he was so proud of me and my time really made the whole experience even more awesome!

What is one thing that most people do not know about you?

There’s not much that people who know me don’t know about me—I am pretty much an open book—but, I am allergic to corn which really makes eating Mexican food (which I LOVE!) really difficult.

Here are all the different ways you can connect with Beth!

Thanks for sharing with us Beth!

Celebration of Stars and Stripes With a Healthy Treat!

Happy Independence Day!!! I hope everyone has an awesome day with awesome friends and family! Oh yeah...and BBQ and Fireworks too! We are spending the holiday with my friend Rhonda...a 4th of July tradition! We will be eating good food, playing games, watching the kids play, and enjoying being together in our land of the free! We will end it with fireworks of course!

As you celebrate be sure to remember how blessed we are to live in a country where we have freedom!

Yesterday the boys and I made 4th of July Fruit Kabobs to take to our celebration at Rhonda's. I wanted a healthy treat and since I'm craving strawberries right now I thought these would be perfect! I found a picture of these on partycity.com. We decided to use marshmallows instead of bananas due to making them the day before. We didn't want the bananas to turn brown. The boys and I had a blast making these! And...they may or may not have eaten a few pieces of fruit (and a marshmallow or two) while assembling! ;-)

Ingredients:
Skewer Sticks
Blueberries
Strawberries
Marshmallows or Bananas

Directions:
Cut the strawberries in half. If you're using bananas, cut them into circles. Alternate each fruit to make an Amercian flag. Enjoy!

Very happy, helpful, hungry boys! :-)

Happy 4th of July from Road Runner Girl!!!

A Glorious Long Run!

Sunday morning...4:30 AM wake-up call...it has been a long time since I've woken up that early for a run! In fact, I haven't woken up that early all summer long! I've been running solo all summer and therefore I start whenever I get out the door. It's been nice not having a schedule to follow but I have missed running with friends.

This past weekend several friends planned a long run and I decided to join them! My friends Gina and Angela (who I ran the Disney Marathon with) are training for the Chicago Marathon. They had to run 9 miles this weekend. I knew my body wasn't ready for 9 right now since I've only been doing 5 mile long runs all summer. So I told them I would join them for 5 miles.

The first few miles flew by! That's what I miss about running with friends...you talk and talk and forget how many miles you've ran and how many you have left to run! We were also running at a fairly decent pace for a long run...I looked down at my Garmin several times and we were running in the 9's!

Around mile 2.5 we met our friends Sally (who also ran the Disney Marathon with us) and Mindy (my name twin)! They were running 3 miles with us. When we met them the sun was just starting to rise. It was beautiful!!!

The rest of the run flew by just as fast! I was having a great run! Everyone talked about how hot it was but to me it was perfect! I have been running later in the day when it is hotter. So 73 degrees that morning felt pretty awesome!

We entered a neighborhood around mile 3.5. I was supposed to run to the first road and turn around while everyone else did the loop. But when it was time for me to turn around...I didn't want to. I felt great and wanted to keep going! So I ran the loop too! We made it out of the neighborhood and Gina and Angela ran the opposite way so they could get in their 9. Mindy, Sally, and I ran together a little while longer.

We reached the parking lot where their cars were parked and I was at 5.3 miles. I decided then and there that I would run 6. I said my goodbyes and turned off on my own. The rest of the run still felt great! I was happy running long...it's my favorite! And I LOVE it when runs feel so good that you don't want to stop!

Yes...that's a corn field behind me! :-)

I also ran this run with my new Armpocket! About a month ago I upgraded my iPhone 4 to the iPhone 5. The 5 is a little bigger than the 4 so my beloved pink Armpocket no longer fit. I was bummed but had plans to purchase a new one when I returned from Disney. Right before I left, I entered a giveaway for an Armpocket on Tamra's blog Just Keep Running. I got an email while out of town and guess what? I WON! So I got to pick out a new Armpocket that fit my new iPhone 5! I was sooo excited!!! The Armpocket worked wonderfully on the run just like my old one!

FYI: It's really hard to take a picture of your arm! This shows the Armpocket without my phone in it...because I was taking the picture with my phone! ;-) But you get the idea!

After stretching and refueling I headed for the shower. But before I got in I noticed my hair. It had a huge knot in it! It was tangled up like a rat's nest! Not fun! Apparently I'm not the only one with this problem! I posted this pic and learned this happens to a lot of you! Thanks to your suggestions on Instagram and Facebook, I may start braiding it for long runs.

The rest of my day consisted of church, lunch at the Mexican restaurant (I swear my family could eat Mexican EVERY meal), a nap on the couch in my compression socks (I was so tired from waking up so early), and then I headed to Rhonda's (one of my best friends) house for the afternoon.

We went on a walk together that afternoon...2.5 miles!

I have to brag on my friend Rhonda for a minute. I am so proud of her! She's lost 50 pounds! I'm so impressed with how dedicated she is. She has totally changed her eating habits and started walking every day! Such an inspiration!

The rest of the night we talked and watched one of our favorite TV shows together! Then it was time to head home...I was exhausted! It was an awesome day that started with an awesome long run!!!

QOTD: Have you ever planned on running a certain amount of miles but during the run decided to run longer?

#GoalGetter2013 Update: June

It's a new month and time to recap last month's #GoalGetter2013 progress! I hope you are all getting after those goals you set back in January!

As you know, I've been using #GoalGetter2013 and the Weekly Chase to help me stay accountable for my running resolutions and weekly goals. I will be doing an update each month to help me stay focused.

Here are my previous updates:
January Update
February Update
March Update

April Update

May Update

Now for the month of June!

Run at least one mile every day for the Runner's World Run Streak: Boom! I crushed this goal this month! I even ran while on vacation! As of today, I have been streaking for 37 days!

Daily Bible Devotion Goal: I've done pretty good with this thanks to She Reads Truth! I've done two bible studies this month...1 Peter and 2 Peter!

Stretch and Roll Daily Goal: Yes! Since I've been running every day this has been easy. Stretching and rolling are part of my run routine so it was easy to crush this goal this month!

Per #GoalGetter2013 requirements, I posted the following picture on Instagram to show my goal progress for June!

For the month of July, I am focusing on running at least 3 times a week and keeping up my mileage. I will start half marathon training in August so I want to be strong and ready! I'm also focusing on cross training. My goal is to incorporate at least one walk in every week..gotta start somewhere right? As I've talked about in my Weekly Chase posts, I want to continue to read my Bible daily. I also want to continue to stretch and roll daily.

I hope you are joining me for both the Weekly Chase and #GoalGetter2013!

Feel free to grab the badge and play along with us as we conquer our goals this year!!! All you have to do is take a photo of you working towards or completing your goal, use the hashtag #GoalGetter2013, and upload it to Instagram and/or Twitter! You can also post your picture on our #GoalGetter2013 Facebook page!

The Weekly Chase #27!

Hey all! I hope you had a great weekend! I did! I spent lots of quality time with the family! We even went and saw Monsters University with the hubby's parents, sister, and her husband! The movie was awesome! I LOVED it! I also had a fabulous long run yesterday morning..I'll tell you more about that later this week!

Look at my little MU students!!! :-)

It's time for another Weekly Chase! Who's ready to set some weekly goals? I encourage to link up your goals with us this week!

Road Runner Girl

Here's how I did last week:

  • Goal #1: Run at least one mile every day (challenge goal). Success! I'm still streaking!  I even got in two 3 milers and a long run this week! :-)
  • Goal #2: Stretch and roll every day. Yep! It helps to remember to stretch and roll everyday when you are running every day!
  • Goal #3: To show the love of Christ at Vacation Bible School. I did my best! Me and my friend Paige taught second graders and had 19 kids in our class! Wednesday night we had 5 in our class accept Christ!!! It was an amazing week!
  • Goal #4: Unpack! Yes! It took me Monday and Tuesday but I got everything unpacked from our vacation!

Here are this week's goals!

Goal #1: Run at least one mile every day. The streak ends on Thursday! I am so proud of myself for how far I've come! And...every run was done outside...no treadmill runs like I did last summer! I want to finish the streak strong!

Goal #2: Stretch and roll every day. Want to continue to do this...even when the run streak is over.

Goal #3: Update my resume. I need to update my resume. I was a substitute teacher last year. I would love to get a job as a teacher aide this year. But if not I will continue to sub. Regardless I need my resume to be as up to date as possible.

Goal #4: Work on St. Jude fundraising. I have neglected this since summer has started due to being so busy. I need to refocus and get those ideas set in motion. If you want to make my day and donate I will love you forever!!! :-) Visit my fundraising page HERE

That's the plan for this week! It's going to be a fun week with July 4th! I hope you all have a wonderful holiday with your family!

QOTD: What are your goals this week?
