Let's DietBet! New Year, New You DietBet!

Who's ready to lose that weight you gained over the holidays? Don't wish for it....WORK for it! Let's lose that holiday weight together!

Because it is so much fun I am hosting another DietBet starting Monday, February 1st!

So...what IS a DietBet? It's exactly what the name says! A bet to lose weight! Here's how it works:

1) Join a game. You can join my game HERE!
2) The pot grows as players join
3) Whoever hits the goal splits the pot!

Sounds easy, right? The game I'm hosting (and playing in) is a 4 week game with a goal to lose 4%. You start out with a bet of $35. During official weigh in time you will submit two digital pictures to the DietBetter referees. One picture will be a head to toe shot of you standing on the scale in airport security attire (that's light indoor clothing with no shoes, belt, hat, outerwear, pocketbook, watches or accessories and empty pockets).  The second picture will be a close up of your official weight on the scale with a piece of paper in the shot showing the word of the day (will be distributed by Dietbetter at the time of the weigh in and serve as an official timestamp). No one will see your weight or pictures except the Dietbetter Referees.

At the end of the game you will have a final weigh in (with photo proof). If you made the 4% goal...you split the pot with the other players that also made the goal! It's a win win situation! You win by losing weight AND you win by earning some money! The more players that play...the bigger the pot!

This will be my seventh time hosting a DietBet game! I even played along on the first two games I hosted and I won money both times! The first time I won $35 and the second time I won $50! All for losing weight! Pretty sweet! You can read both of those recaps below!

I'll be sharing some of the weight loss tips I've learned and things that have worked for me during the game. And we can all interact together! It will be fun!

So who is going to join me in the most fun you'll ever having losing weight??? I hope you're raising your hand! Go ahead and join my game HERE!

Road Runner Girl's September Slim Down DietBet Recap!

I hosted my second DietBet game last month! Not only did I host it but I also played along! I only had a few more pounds to lose to make it to my goal weight and I knew the DietBet would be just the motivation I needed! It was a success! Playing the DietBet pushed me to reach my goal weight! :-)

Because it was so much fun I am hosting another DietBet starting Monday, October 27th! The holidays are coming up and if you're like me you want to look and feel great when you spend time with your family! I hope you will join me for Road Runner Girl's Fall Into Shape DietBet!!!

To refresh your memory, here's how DietBet works:

1) Join a game. You can join my game HERE!
2) The pot grows as players join
3) Whoever hits the goal splits the pot!

Sounds easy, right? The game I'm hosting is a 4 week game with a goal to lose 4%. You start out with a bet of $25. During official weigh in time (October 25th-26th) you will submit two digital pictures to the DietBetter referees. You win by losing weight AND you win by earning some money! The more players that play...the bigger the pot!

Sounds fun right? I promise you it is!!! And the game is over November 24th...just in time for that Thanksgiving feast!

I told you I had fun playing didn't I? Well here's how it went for me. I started the game with my official weigh in photos.

To win the DietBet I needed to lose 4% in 28 days...or 4.8 pounds. The weight I needed to be at the end of the game in order to win was 115.1.

So for the next few weeks I did what I was doing already...counted my calories using My Fitness Pal. I ran. And I checked in on my DietBet page every day to see how all the other players were doing. We commented on each other's posts and encouraged and motivated each other. It was great! I could weigh-in as much as I wanted (they weren't official weigh-ins so I didn't have to submit photos) to see my progress.

Was it tough? Well yes. Dieting IS tough. But when you have money on the line it makes you even more motivated. And I had all the other players in the game that I felt like I couldn't let down.

The 28 days FLEW by! Before I knew it it was time to do my last weigh-in to determine if I had won. I was so nervous stepping on that scale. And on the first weigh in day...I was OVER by a pound! I was so upset! I had just weighed a few days before and I was under by a pound! I got really nervous but knew I could weigh in one more day. So the next morning I weighed again....and there it was! My winning weight of 114.4!!!! Whew!!! I'm not sure what happened the day before...water weight? Maybe I was swollen for some reason? I have no clue!

But I did it!!! I lost 5.5 pounds during the DietBet! And the best part...I won $50!!!! Pretty awesome!!!

Because it was such a blast I was super excited to get asked to host another DietBet! I LOVE encouraging and motivating others in their weight loss journey so I'm super excited to host again!!!

I hope you will join my Road Runner Girl's Fall Into Shape DietBet!!!! Sign up to play TODAY!!!

Healthier Snacks for a Healthier You!

On my weight loss journey I've had to rethink my snacking. In the past I've always gone towards the unhealthy snacks....cookies (Oreos are my favorite), chips, candy (Blow Pops and Rolos), soda. But when you are trying to lose weight those snacks don't cut it. So I had to start choosing healthier snacks for a healthier me.

These are some of the snacks that I choose on a regular basis!

FRUIT
You can never go wrong with fruit! I love it! And my body actually craves fruit now over sugary snacks. My favorites are strawberries, fresh pineapple, and fresh peaches. I do most of my fruit shopping (and veggie shopping) at a local farmer's market. The fruit tastes so much better and I love supporting the local farmers in my area.

Tip for buying fresh Pineapple! Cutting a whole pineapple is a lot of work and already cut up pineapple is expensive. A cheaper alternative is buying the pineapple core. The outside of the pineapple is already cut off. All you have to do is take the core out and cut up the pineapple yourself. The hardest part is already done for you! It's about $3 cheaper to do it this way.

GREEK YOGURT
This is like heaven in a cup! Yogurt is good for you anyway but when you choose Greek yogurt you get the extra protein in there. My favorite brand is Yoplait Greek 100 calorie cups. My favorite flavors are key lime, lemon, strawberry, strawberry cheesecake, and apple pie! And when you freeze them it's a whole other experience! So yummy!

STRING CHEESE
I don't eat nearly as much cheese as I used to. But every now and then I would like some. The regular string cheese that I buy has 70 calories in it. They also have low fat versions that probably have less calories.

APPLESAUCE
I know it's weird but I don't like apples. So that's one fruit I don't eat and never have...unless it was in a pie! But I've always loved applesauce! And my boys love it too. You can buy regular or natural applesauce. The natural has about 50 calories per serving and the regular has 90 calories per serving. We also like flavored applesauce like cinnamon and strawberry.

SPECIAL K CEREAL BARS
I love these cereal bars! The strawberry and blueberry ones are my favorite. There are only 90 calories in each bar. I eat these for breakfast sometimes, before runs, or as a snack.

PEANUT BUTTER CRACKERS
These are one of my favorite snacks! There's something about peanut butter on a cracker! This snack has 180 calories in it so I don't eat it every day. It is one of my treat snacks.

RAW VEGGIES
Raw broccoli, cauliflower, and cherry tomatoes (I know they're technically a fruit) are my favorites. Carrots are good too...my boys love them raw but I don't like carrots at all. My boys like to dip the veggies in ranch dressing but I like to eat them by themselves or dip them in hummus.

Sorry this picture isn't the best...I told you we loved our raw veggies! ;-)

HUMMUS
Hummus is an absolute treat around here! I love it but don't have it all the time because I could eat way more than the portion says lol! I used to dip crackers and pretzels in hummus but now I usually dip veggies.

So those are a few of the snacks I'm eating. I find different healthy snacks all the time! I love exploring all the foods that are better for my body than chips and cookies! :-)

Transformation Tuesday!

Have you ever heard of #TransformationTuesday? It's a popular hashtag on social media that occurs on....yep you guessed it...Tuesday's! Basically you post a picture of a transformation. It could be a picture of you as a baby and an adult. Or the ladies may post a fashion or makeup transformation. One of the most popular ones is the before and after (or then and now as my friend Dani likes to call it). And this refers to mostly weight loss. I posted my very first #TransformationTuesday picture last week with this caption:

Only 6 months ago I was miserable in my own skin. I was running all the time but wasn't happy with my body. I was overweight and knew it but just didn't have the fight to do anything about it. About a month after this Disney Marathon Weekend I became determined to get healthy. I've since lost 24 pounds and feel amazing and so healthy!

I got such a response from posting this picture! So many people commented on how great I looked and felt! Thank you all so much! But one of my favorite comments was asking how I did it. What did I do to lose weight? And how could I help them?

If you've been reading my blog for awhile then you know I've been using the app My Fitness Pal to help me count calories. The biggest part of losing weight in my opinion is logging every single thing that you eat. Because even that bite of that cookie adds up! And logging calories has naturally made me start choosing healthier foods...because they are less calories! :-) I promise to do a longer post about my weight loss success later!

Posting these photos is not because I am vain. I post them to encourage others. I want them to know that I've been there. And I overcame! And I lost that weight that was literally weighing me down.

I post these photos in the hopes that I can encourage someone else to become a healthier version of themselves!

Losing weight is hard work! And I'm not ashamed to show my success! I'm not ashamed to show the new glow in my smile from feeling and looking healthier and healthier!

And I will admit that looking at the pictures from then and now makes me feel good inside too. I feel more confident in myself. And that is a good thing!

My weight loss journey is not over yet. I still have about 5 more pounds to lose to reach my goal weight. But this has been more than just a diet. This has been more than just losing pounds. This has been a lifestyle change for me. And it's one that I plan to keep for the rest of my life!

QOTD: What is your favorite healthy snack? (I need some more ideas) ;-)

The Weekly Chase #64!

Happy Tuesday friends! Thanks so much to my Weekly Chasers for your patience in my post being a day late. I was super excited to tell you about the #HeatItUp April Instagram Photo Challenge yesterday! I hope you are all going to join in on the fun!

This weekend went by way too fast! Saturday I DID run my 10K race! I felt really good despite having strep throat two days before. But then on Sunday my allergies flared up and I had a headache, sinus drainage, and a scratchy throat! Pollen is everywhere you look around here right now. My car is covered with it and when I ran the other day there was pollen on my phone! Crazy!

In exciting news...my son Hayden decided he wants to train for a 5K!!! Sunday afternoon we ran his first run of the couch to 5K program! He did so great!!! He started getting tired during the run portions so I got him to talking about Lego's (his favorite things) and he forgot he was even running!!! I hope he wants to keep this up!

Now it's time for another Weekly ChaseI'm ready to tell you all about my goals for this week! I hope you will link up your own goals with me too! And feel free to use the badge below in your post too! You can grab the badge HERE! :-)

Road Runner Girl

Here are last week's goals!

  • Goal #1: Run at least 2-3 times this week. Yes! I wanted to get in 3 runs but strep throat made me cancel one of them lol!
  • Goal #2: Roll and stretch daily. Yes!
  • Goal #3: Log and stay under all my calories this week. 95%! I stayed under my calories every day except Friday when I was fueling for my race. Some days were harder than others but I was strong!
  • Goal #4: Figure out my running outfit for the race this weekend. I ended up wearing a black shirt, royal blue sparkle skirt, and black compression socks.

Here are the goals I am working on this week!

Goal #1: Run 3 times this week. I hope to get in 2 short runs and then I have my last half marathon of the spring season on Saturday. It's starting to get way too hot to run half marathons so this will be my last one until the fall.

Goal #2: Roll and stretch daily. Gotta keep this up!

Goal #3: Log and stay under all my calories this week except Friday when I'll be fueling for my race the next day. I've been doing pretty good with this! Some days are definitely harder than others but I'm loving that my clothes are fitting better! I've lost 5.3 pounds so far!!!

Goal #4: Hydrate and fuel well for my half marathon on Saturday. I need to be sure to drink plenty of water this week. I've been doing great with this since I've started counting calories but need to make sure I keep it up this week. I also need to eat some extra carbs (pizza!!!!) on Friday before the race.

That's my plan for this week! Not a whole lot different from last week but goals are goals, right?!

QOTD: What are your goals this week?

I'm looking forward to a day of wearing green and trying to catch a leprechaun with my preschool class today! It should be fun!

This weekend was great! I had a great race on Saturday and then I got to walk around the Fairhope Arts and Crafts festival with my friend Paige and all our boys! We had fun!

Sunday was a day of thunderstorms and tornado warnings...not fun! March is really coming in like a lion!

Now it's time for another Weekly ChaseI'm ready to tell you all about my goals for this week! I hope you will link up your own goals with me too! And feel free to use the badge below in your post too! You can grab the badge HERE! :-)

  • Goal #4: Cook at least 2 meals at home this week. Yes! We cooked enchiladas and pork chops this week!

Here are the goals I'm working towards this week!

Goal #1: Run at least 2-3 times this week. I hope to get in two short runs during the week and then I have another 10K race on Saturday! :-)

Weight Loss for a Runner is Tough!

I feel like my main topic right now is how many calories I'm eating and how it affects my runs! This weight loss thing is a lot harder than I thought it would be...but for different reasons than I thought.

I expected to feel hungry. Since I had been eating such large portions I know I have stretched my stomach out and it has to shrink back down.

I expected to not be able to eat my favorite not-so-good for you foods (ahem, pizza and Oreos)!

I expected to be running to the bathroom more due to my increase in water.

I expected to make healthier food choices.

What I didn't expect was how hard it would be to balance the amount of calories I need on the days I run. And on the day before my long run.

I've been experimenting with the calories on the day before my long run. I've learned that I may need more calories on that day. And I need more carbs (I know some runners don't believe in carb loading but it works for my body). Thus...my tradition of eating pizza the night before a long run can remain alive! (oh yes I am happy about that!!!)

My friend from work sent me this the other day and it made me laugh so hard!!!

I'm struggling with the days that I run a short run.

Let's talk numbers! I'm using the My Fitness Pal (MFP) App to help me with my weight loss. When I first made weight loss a goal I used MFP to help me determine how many calories to eat in a day. I didn't want to totally shock my body so I told MFP that I wanted to lose at least 1 pound a week. I also said I was lightly active (because I am on my feet a good part of the day as a teacher and because I only run 3 times a week). Based on my age and current weight my calorie goal is 1380.

1380 is pretty fair. If I make healthy choices (which is part of my goal too) then I can stay in this range easily. Since I started this journey (been doing it for 2.5 weeks) I've only gone over my calorie goal once...and that was the day before a long run so I went over with the purpose of fueling for the run.

The days that I run are a different story. On those days I burn anywhere from 300-400 calories (long run days I burn over 1000 calories). So even if I eat 1380 calories that day...I'm only netting 980-1080 a day! Is that bad? Am I supposed to re-eat all those calories I just burned???

I know that if you eat too many calories...you can't lose weight. But if you don't eat enough calories...you won't lose weight either because your body will think it is starving and store those calories as fat. So on the days that I run does my body think I'm starving myself because I've only net consumed about 1000 calories???

It's all so confusing lol!

Now I also know that I shouldn't focus on calories mainly. I should mainly be focusing on eating healthier foods. Well counting the calories has helped me do this!

I HAVE to have a plan people! Just like with running...I have a training schedule...with weight loss I need a plan!

I will say that since I've started this I feel great! Not overeating makes me have a happy tummy! And...I've lost 4.7 pounds so far! :-)

I know that with everything, this is a learning process. I have to learn what works well for my body.

QOTD: Any weight loss tips for me as a runner?

The Weekly Chase #62!

Spring is in the air! Or at least it felt like that this weekend!!! I'm happy to say that my 11 mile run on Saturday morning went well! I made sure to eat more calories on Friday (including my pizza) to help fuel me for the run and I think it worked! :-)

Saturday night my running friends and I all got together for a surprise birthday party for my BRF Paige! She was totally in shock and surprised! It was great!!!

Yes! I only got in 1 short run (due to stormy weather) and a long run. I also got in a walk with my boys this week!
  • Goal #2: Roll and stretch daily. Yep!
  • Goal #3: Log and stay under all my calories this week. 95%! I did really well keeping under my calories...although some days were harder than others. I went over by 200 calories on Friday but that was intentional since I was fueling up for my long run the next day. So far I've lost 1.2 pounds! I weight on Tuesdays so I'm curious to see the number tomorrow.

Here are my goals for this week!

Goal #1: Run at least 2-3 times this week. I'm hoping to get in 2 short runs and a longer run on the weekend.

Goal #2: Roll and stretch daily. So far the tight quad issue is gone! I'm hoping it doesn't come back! I will continue to roll and stretch daily to stay injury free!

Goal #3: Log and stay under all my calories this week. I've been doing really well with this. I hope to keep it up so I can lose that extra weight that I do not need or want.

Goal #4: Cook at least 2 meals at home this week. And I want to cook healthy meals that will go along well with my diet.

That's the plan for my week!

QOTD: What goals are you chasing this week?
