Runner Spotlights #51

Happy Labor Day weekend!!! I hope you are all enjoying your time off! We've had a pretty lazy weekend so far! I ran 7 miles yesterday morning. Then we went out to lunch and shopped that afternoon. Then it was back home for some football! I'm so excited that it's college football season again!!! War Eagle!

It's time for another runner spotlight! If you are interested in being spotlighted on my blog please email me at mindy@roadrunnergirl.com. I would love to feature you! You don't have to have a blog to be spotlighted...you just have to be a runner! I'm running low on spotlights so don't hesitate to send me that email! :-)

Today I'm spotlighting Suzan from Welcome to the Nuthouse! Her blog is hilarious! And of course she is an awesome runner too! Keep reading to learn more about her!

Name: Suzan
State: Texas

When and why did you start running?
It happened by accident. I signed up for a 5K as a training walk for the Breast Cancer 3Day. I saw all these people running past me and thought “I should be able to do that, too!”

What is your favorite race and race distance?
I would say 13.1. I have only done one and I am currently training for my second. It was a big deal for me to join the Half Marathon Club. I also loved the Jailbreak obstacle race. I really had to push myself during that race.

What is your race day routine?
Coffee and a small breakfast. My standard would be toast with almond butter and a banana. I set everything out the night before, including pinning my bib to my shirt. I like to give myself lots of extra time. I tend to panic if I am running the tiniest bit late.

What is your most favorite piece of running gear?
My newest shoes, the Brooks PureDrift. I have struggled for a year with terrible shin splints and when I switched to these shoes, everything fell into place. Close second would be my Garmin. It’s awesome to be able to plug it in to the computer and see all my runs in one place.

Do you follow any diet or take any specific supplements that complement your running?
I am currently trying to follow the Matt Fitzgerald Racing Weight book. I struggle with getting enough veggies in my diet and I have a love affair with food, not always the kind that is good for me! Other than that, I have found that I can’t do my summer runs without my Hammer Endurolytes.

What do you wish you’d known when you first started running?
Slow down, listen to your body. Join a running club or online community. The support is just as important as the training.

What is your fondest running memory?
Seeing the finish line for that first half marathon. Not crossing it, but seeing it and knowing what I was about to accomplish.

What is one thing that most people do not know about you?
I am terrified of the sound of balloons popping. (and my family thinks that is hilarous)
